Signs of a Gas Leak
Gas leaks can develop gradually, and the early signs are easy to miss if you don't know what to look for. Being able to recognise them quickly is an important part of keeping your home safe.
The most obvious sign is smell — natural gas and LPG both have an added odorant that smells like rotten eggs, specifically so leaks can be detected. If you notice this smell anywhere near an appliance, gas line or meter, take it seriously.
Other signs are less obvious. A hissing sound near a gas pipe or appliance, a pilot light that keeps going out, gas appliances that suddenly aren't heating properly, or an unexplained increase in your gas bill can all point to a leak somewhere in the system.
If you do suspect a gas leak: turn off the gas supply at the meter if it's safe to do so, don't use light switches, phones or anything that could create a spark, open doors and windows if possible, and leave the property. Contact a licensed gas plumber immediately once you're somewhere safe.
Gas work should only ever be carried out by a licensed professional. Attempting to locate or fix a suspected leak yourself carries real safety risks that simply aren't worth taking.
